Gaymer Memorial Cottages is a four property terrace in Attleborough, Norfolk. It was built in 1948 to commemorate a member of the local Gaymer family who fought in the Second World War. The family owned the Gaymer Cider Company and the cottages are situated near to the old cider factory, and would have looked out onto the orchard that supplied the factory. The cottages were originally built for the factory workers and their families, but are now held in trust by Hastoe Housing Association. Number four was the subject of the retrofit - a single storey, two bedroom bungalow, which was unoccupied before the retrofit commenced. Pre-retrofit it had solid walls, single steel-framed glazing and very little loft insulation. The cottage was also off the main gas network and was heated by electric storage heaters, which placed a great financial burden on tenants for warmth. The retrofit sought to improve the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of the property by retrofitting increased levels of insulation and various renewable technologies, as well as reducing carbon emissions.
